On Wednesday 15th January 2024 Daniel Borg, CEO of the Chamber, participated in the Standing Committee on Gozo Affairs within the Maltese Parliament. The Committee discussed tourism in Gozo during the Christmas season.
In his intervention and presentation Daniel Borg highlighted first of all that the structure of the tourism demand in Gozo is evolving and this needs to be taken into consideration if a correct analysis on the subject matter is to be undertaken. This includes for example the fact that a significant number of Maltese people have bought their second home in Gozo, and this constitutes a significant portion of the domestic tourism demand. Demand is showing that the importance of domestic tourism has grown signficantly in the past years. Another important aspect includes the fact that a singificant increase in beds has occurred with the majority of the beds being in the self catering sector.
Daniel Borg also presented the reactions of Chamber members on tourism related to the Christmas season. This showed that considering everything the impact on tourism during the Christmas holidays was a positive one. This, despite the various challenges that are being experience including the inflationary push, which is affecting the economy. Daniel Borg remarked that this needs to be analysed carefully, including the impact on Gozitan businesses which face extra costs in their supply chain.
