The National Statistics Office has just published the statistics for the Collective Accommodation Establishments for the 2nd quarter of 2022.

As indicated in the same news release, on a regional level, total guests in Malta numbered 487,299 while number of nights spent at these establishments stood at 2,190,020. Total guests and nights in Gozo and Comino increased to 25,187 and 71,391 respectively from 11,438 and 26,924 registered in 2021 (Tables 1 and 2).  In 2019 the number of guests and nights stood at 28,191 and 89,728 respectively.

When compared with the same quarter of the previous year, in Malta, the average length of stay went up by 0.2 of a night to 4.5 nights. In Gozo and Comino the average length of stay increased by 0.5 of a night to 2.8 nights. The net occupancy rate in Malta increased by 40.7 percentage points, reaching 59.2 per cent, and that in Gozo and Comino increased by 17.8 percentage points to 40.5 per cent (Table 3).

It is also interesting to note that resident guests in the second quarter of 2022 amounting to 13,787 surpassed the resident guests registered in the same period of 2019, which amounted to 12,815.  On the contrary the non-resident guests amounted to 11,400 for the second quarter of 2022.  For the same period in 2019, this amounted to 15,376.

This highlights the present trend indicating Gozo’s reliance on the domestic tourism market.  While this should continue to be encouraged, as the Maltese residents will resume travelling abroad it is important that the foreign inbound tourism market in Gozo continues to increase consistently.
