A Flexible, Differentiated and Permanent State Aid regime for EU Islands

In its letter on the 6th of July 2020 the Network of Insular Chambers of the European Union-INSULEAUR, suggested a fair and inclusive recovery to address the economic and social problems which all the EU states suffered during the current pandemic. INSULEUR reiterated the need for the adoption of a specific strategy for EU islands. The President of INSULEUR, Joseph Borg, also suggested that EU governments must provide adequate support in their policies and budgets by factoring a differentiated and permanent solution to islands’ concerns by targeting proposals for the:

  • Diversification island economies;
  • Supporting islands with the migration influx;
  • Ensuring flexibility in the State Aid regime (with a higher threshold for islands);
  • Adopting a specific VAT regime for islands.
