On October 2nd, Joseph Borg, President of INSULEUR, represented the Gozo Business Chamber as a panelist during a thematic seminar at the CPMR – Conference of Peripheral Maritime Regions, which is currently being held in Gozo. The seminar focused on the opportunities and challenges of transport and tourism in peripheral maritime regions, with a particular focus on the ongoing Ten-T revision and its impact on island regions.
During his intervention, Joseph Borg emphasized the importance of balancing connectivity with environmental sustainability, stating:
“Combining accessibility and sustainability is not only possible but essential. Islands, archipelagos, and isolated regions must remain connected, but in ways that align with the EU’s environmental commitments.”
Borg also outlined the critical steps needed for the next EU legislative term to support islands:
- Targeted EU funding tailored to the specific needs of island regions
- Island-specific regulatory frameworks that facilitate the adoption of alternative fuels, innovative technologies, and green infrastructure
- Increased support for green corridors and alternative fuel infrastructure designed for island communities
His intervention underline the need for sustainable, flexible solutions that ensure continued accessibility for islands while supporting environmental objectives.
