Daniel Borg, CEO of the Gozo Business Chamber recently took part in a trade mission to Japan aimed at strengthening ties and exploring new business opportunities. The mission, which took place from 11th to 16th November 2024, focused on expanding Malta’s presence in key sectors such as education, IT, and gastronomy. These sectors are pivotal for the Gozo’s future economic development, as they represent niches which exhibit significant potential for growth.
The delegation was coordinated by Ambassador Andre Spiteri, Malta’s Ambassador to Japan, and included representatives from key Maltese institutions such as the University of Malta, MCAST, Education Malta, the Malta Food Agency, and Heritage Malta.
Promoting Gozo’s Economic Potential
The delegation’s visit began with a networking seminar in Tokyo titled “Linking Japan and Malta through Commercial and Cultural Ties” at the International House of Japan. During the event, Daniel Borg had the opportunity to highlight Gozo’s growing economic sectors, with a special focus on its educational and IT offerings. The seminar featured high-level interventions, including remarks by Minoro Kiuschi, Minister of State for Economic Security, and Ambassador Andre Spiteri, who emphasized the importance of deepening Malta-Japan relations. A promotional video showcasing Malta, with special mention of Gozo, was also presented. In Tokyo Daniel Borg also had the opportunity to have a meeting with representatives from MIPRO. MIPRO (Manufactured Imports and Investment Promotion Organization) is a non-profit organization in Japan dedicated to promoting the import of manufactured goods and foreign investment. It assists businesses in navigating Japan’s import regulations and connecting with potential local partners. During the meeting, MIPRO representatives provided valuable insights into Japan’s food and beverage market.
Exploring Opportunities in Osaka
Following the Tokyo meetings, the delegation travelled to Osaka, where Daniel Borg participated in another key event at the Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry. This session, “Linking Malta and Osaka through Commercial and Cultural Ties,” facilitated discussions on business partnerships.
In Osaka, Daniel Borg held a series of meetings with representatives from several sectors, including automotive, medical equipment, and tourism, exploring potential opportunities for Gozo businesses. Of particular note was the interest in Gozo’s high-quality tourism offerings, which align with the growing interest among Japanese tourists in European destinations.
Innovation and Collaboration in Osaka
A visit to Quintbridge, an open innovation hub in Osaka, sparked discussions on the potential for similar collaborative spaces in Gozo. Quintbridge, operated by NTT West, fosters innovation through its co-working spaces, fabrication areas, and startup ecosystem.
Looking Ahead: Strengthening Ties with Japan
The trip to Japan is expected to lay the foundation for further collaboration between Gozo and Japanese businesses, particularly in the fields of education, IT, and gastronomy. The EXPO 2025 in Osaka presents a significant opportunity for Gozo to showcase its offerings on a global stage, and the Gozo Business Chamber is already exploring follow-up initiatives with the businesses and organizations met during this trip.
