On 15th March 2024, during the conference Vapuri Ġodda għal Għawdex, organised by MEP Dr Peter Agius, the President of the Gozo Business Chamber, Michael Galea, and CEO Daniel Borg, addressed the urgent need for improved connectivity to support Gozo’s economic and social development.

Rising Demand, but No Infrastructure Upgrade

Michael Galea highlighted that, while ferry trips, vehicles, and passengers have significantly increased between 2018-2024, the port infrastructure has remained unchanged. He stressed the importance of investing in:

  • Gozo’s port facilities and ancillary infrastructure
  • A second point of accessibility to Mġarr
  • Contingency services to ensure uninterrupted connectivity
  • A second point of access to the island

He underlined that connectivity is the foundation for Gozo’s future, supporting:

  • A sustainable economy
  • A society built on the common good
  • Better opportunities for the younger generation

A Holistic Plan for Accessibility and the Port’s Future

Daniel Borg emphasised the need for a long-term strategy to assess the state of Gozo’s port and its accessibility. He noted that:

  • If alternative energy solutions for ferries are introduced, the necessary infrastructure must be in place to support them.
  • A real commitment from both the Government and the Opposition, as an alternative Government, is required to ensure concrete action.
  • As highlighted by Professor Godfrey Baldacchino, connectivity for islands is not just a necessity—it is a fundamental right.
  • In this context he highlighted the importance of regional governance for the Gozitan community to decide its own priorities and for these to be acted upon.
