Budget 2015 Press Release

The Gozo Business Chamber is looking at the 2015 Budget as one which is a continuation to the previous budget and without any shocks to the economy while it is also trying to make work pay by controlling more the abuse on social services. It is a budget which is very much pro-business by trying to decrease bureaucracy and increase more fair competition; the elimination of the Eco Tax is a case in point.  The proposal for the setting up of a Development Bank is a step in the right direction to facilitate more access to finance to SME’s.

The GBC is pleased to note that there will be special schemes by ETC for the job creation in Gozo.  The GBC augurs that the studies on the permanent link between Gozo and Malta, a new fibre optic cable and that of a fixed wing runway in Gozo will be completed in a short period of time in order to have these projects brought to fruition as soon as possible.

The only disappointment the GBC has is in the increase in the fees for the licences for swimming pools and the increase in the tax on the price of cement.

Funds for a feasibility study for a fibre optic cable between Malta and Gozo have been allocated, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat said this morning.

Addressing a cabinet meeting in Gozo, he said this would help software companies like RS2 operate from the sister island.

Gozo Regional Committee chairman Michael Grech highlighted the initiatives taken in the past year as part of its remit to advise the government on matters related to the sister island.
